Tiny tweaks. Big cozy payoffs.
Let’s be real—Colorado winters don’t play nice. One minute you’re enjoying that dreamy snow globe view from your living room, the next your pipes are plotting mutiny and your heating bill just doubled overnight. And that weird draft blowing through your kitchen? Yeah, that’s not a “ghost”—it’s poor insulation whispering “spend more money.”
But don’t panic. Before you go full DIY MacGyver with duct tape and a space heater, we’ve rounded up five small-but-mighty fixes that actually do something—and won’t break the bank.
Cold air loves a good sneak attack—through doors, windows, electrical outlets, attic hatches, and even recessed lighting. Drafts not only make your home colder, but they also make your heating system work overtime.
Install weather stripping around doors and windows. Add door sweeps (yes, the ones shaped like little dogs totally count), and grab some caulk to fill in those sneaky gaps.
Light a candle near your window frame. If the flame flickers sideways, you’ve got a draft. Now you’ve got a reason to hit the hardware store and feel like a detective.
If you’re not changing your furnace filter regularly, you’re asking your HVAC system to breathe through a dust-coated sock. And if it has to work harder, you’ll pay harder.
Replace your filter every 1–3 months depending on how many pets (or teenagers) you have running around. Set a phone reminder so Future You doesn’t forget.
Got allergies? A clean filter improves indoor air quality too. Fewer sneezes = better winter vibes.
Frozen pipes aren’t just a plumbing problem—they’re a wallet explosion. When water freezes, it expands. And when it expands in your pipes? Let’s just say your basement won’t be grateful.
Use foam pipe sleeves or heat tape to wrap exposed pipes, especially in crawl spaces, garages, and under sinks. It’s cheap insurance for a pricey disaster.
Keep cabinet doors open during cold snaps so warm air circulates around pipes. Yes, your bathroom might look weird, but your pipes won’t burst. Worth it.
Winter makes everything work harder—including your dryer. Add a clogged vent to the mix and suddenly your cozy laundry day turns into a fire hazard or an energy-sucking marathon.
Check and clear lint from both the internal trap and the exterior vent. Snow and ice can block the outside vent, too—don’t let it freeze shut!
If your laundry takes longer than usual to dry, or your laundry room feels warmer than it should, your vent is crying for help. And yes, we do dryer vent cleaning too (shameless plug).
Still using the same thermostat from when Friends was airing new episodes? It’s time. A programmable or smart thermostat can adjust temps when you’re away, save energy, and keep things toasty when it counts.
Install a basic programmable model—or go full high-tech with a smart one that learns your habits and helps you save money while you sleep.
Set it to lower the heat while you’re asleep or at work. You won’t notice the chill, but your energy bill will definitely notice the drop.
Heading out of town? Second home in Grand County? Don’t let your property fend for itself. Our Winter Check-Ins are designed to catch little problems before they turn into giant (expensive) ones.
